The Feldenkrais Method® is a modality that has been successfully used in Physical therapy for many years. The Feldenkrais Method is a type of neuromuscular re-education that is used to restore and optimize movement. It does this by helping the patient learn new movement patterns. The process of the re-training uses passive and active range of motion as well as specific gentle joint mobilization techniques to improve flexibility and coordination. The specific movements increase sensory and proprioceptive input to the central nervous system. By using this type of neurological rehabilitation, we can decrease excess tone and increase voluntary muscular control, thereby increasing functional abilities. The sessions are organized to address movements related to specific functions such as reaching, bending and walking, or to improve balance and coordination. Specific exercises are recommended to each patient to practice between appointments. Feldenkrais has been very effective in treating people with a variety of diagnoses such as chronic pain, repetitive use injuries, back pain, postural problems, and neurological conditions. |
